WHEN her ex-husband called to tell her that their son was in an accident, she thought it was a joke.

Madam Rozni Jumaat, 35, was resting in her three-room flat at Clementi when her ex-husband called her around 2pm yesterday.

She said: 'He told me that our son, Danial Syawal, had been in an accident. When I heard that, I told him to stop joking.'

But it soon dawned on Madam Rozni that her ex-husband was serious.

Her mind started racing, as she thought that her 12-year-old son had met with a road accident while cycling home from school.

The housewife said: 'When my ex-husband said he had heard the news from one of Danial's teachers, I became afraid.

'Just that morning, I had warned him to be careful when cycling.'

Then she learned the terrible truth - her eldest child had been found floating face-down in a pool at the Clementi Sports Complex.

'My ex-husband told me to calm down but I could not believe the news,' she said.

'Danial was a good swimmer who learnt to swim on his own and taught his siblings to swim whenever we went to the beach.

'He also had no medical problems that I knew of.'

When she learnt that Danial had been sent to National University Hospital (NUH), Madam Rozni rushed there.

But she was too late - she arrived just in time to learn that Danial was dead.

What happened to Danial, a Secondary 1 student at New Town Secondary School, is still unclear.

Madam Rozni said his physical education (PE) teacher told her that Danial and his classmates had gone to the swimming complex for their weekly swimming lesson.

Danial's class has about 40 students, she said.

Madam Rozni added that apart from the teacher, there were at least two instructors conducting the lesson for the students at the complex.

She said: 'When the lesson was over, the teacher did a head count and found that one student was missing.

'The teacher looked towards the pool and saw Danial floating face-down. He was rushed to NUH.
'The PE teacher told me that he was devastated by what had happened.'

New Town Secondary School principal Neo Lay Wah told Lianhe Zaobao that Danial and 17 other students were at the 0.9 metre-deep pool when their coach found him unconscious in the water.

Madam Neo said the school has been in touch with Danial's family to give them the necessary assistance. The other students who were with Danial during the incident have also been counselled.

Police spokesman Liu Xiangling said they were informed at 1.50pm yesterday that a boy was found unconscious and floating in one of the swimming pools at Clementi Sports Complex.

She said the boy was pronounced dead at 3pm after he was taken to the hospital.

The police are investigating the death.

Madam Rozni said last night that she was still trying to come to terms with her loss.

She said: 'I can still smell him and sense that he is in the flat.'

Pointing to a spot on the living room floor beside the sofa, she said that that was where Danial slept - his 'special spot'.

Although he was not studious, Madam Rozni said Danial was a determined child who worked hard to get what he had set his mind on.

She said: 'He was a happy-go-lucky boy and seldom studied hard for his exams. When his PSLE was drawing near, I told him that I thought he was going to fail. But he told me that he would prove me wrong, and he did.'

Danial scored 233 points for his Primary School Leaving Examination and his aunt gave him a computer as a gift for doing well in the exam.

Madam Rozni said that Danial's aunt, her twin sister, could not believe the news.

'When I told her, she pushed me away and told me not to play the fool with her. Danial was her confidante and best friend.'

Madam Rozni said that Danial was a good student and his teachers had also praised him for his leadership qualities.

His hobbies included playing computer games, cycling, football, skateboarding and performing on his unicycle.

She said that Danial often urged his 11-year-old sister, Dhiya, and 9-year-old brother, Danish, to do their homework and listen to their mother and elders.

Madam Rozni has a fourth child, 3, from her second marriage.

She said: 'He would tell them that the time would come when he would not be around and they would have to be on their own. I never thought that that time would come so soon.'

Remembering her son as her 'teacher', Madam Rozni said: 'He often taught me more than I taught him. He taught me how to solve maths problems and also taught me science.

'I was looking forward to him teaching me algebra. Now that he is gone, I wonder how I am going to cope with helping the other children with their schoolwork.'

After saying those words, Madam Rozni turned to Dhiya and told her: 'Now you have to be strong for mama, understand? I need you.

'You have to take abang's (elder brother in Malay) place.'

Danial will be buried this afternoon.

Despite the pain from her loss, MadamRosni said life has to go on.

She said: 'I have to be strong for the sake of my three other children.

'Danial told me that one day, he would look after me and make sure that I would never have to live in misery.

'But now, that day will never come and his dream will not come true.'
